Teeth Whitening

    Teeth Whitening in Jeddah

Whitening is one of the simplest and most requested cosmetic treatments, because it restores lost shades without altering the structure of the tooth itself.

The difference between a good result and a disappointing one is diagnosis: identifying why the colour changed first, because not every discolouration responds to whitening.

    Why do teeth change colour?

Extrinsic causes: coffee, tea, smoking and certain foods leave pigments on the enamel surface — these respond best to whitening.

Intrinsic causes: changes within the dentine from ageing, certain medications or previous trauma to the tooth, which respond less and may need other solutions.

A third cause often overlooked: decay or old discoloured fillings — these are treated, not whitened.

    In-clinic or take-home whitening?

In-clinic: a higher concentration applied under direct supervision with the gums isolated, with results after one or two sessions. The better option when you want a fast result.

Take-home with custom trays made by the dentist: a lower concentration used over a longer period, giving a gradual result that is gentler on sensitivity.

Many cases combine both: an in-clinic session followed by trays at home to maintain the result.

Over-the-counter products and home remedies give limited results, and some are abrasive and genuinely damage enamel.

    Is whitening safe for enamel?

Professional whitening under dentist supervision is safe for enamel when applied at the correct concentration and duration, supported by decades of clinical practice.

The real risk comes from products of unknown origin, excessive unsupervised use, or abrasive home mixtures containing rough materials.

Temporary sensitivity after whitening is common and usually settles within days; it can be reduced with a desensitising toothpaste before and after.

What does not respond to whitening?

Fillings, crowns and veneers do not change with whitening — their shade is fixed. So the mouth is whitened first, then any new restoration is matched to the new shade.

Deep intrinsic staining may not respond sufficiently, and veneers can be the more suitable answer.

This assessment should come before whitening so the outcome is not a surprise.

    Keeping the result

Cut down on staining drinks particularly in the first 48 hours, when enamel picks up pigment more readily.

Use a straw with iced coffee and coloured drinks, and brush or rinse afterwards.

Smoking is the fastest route back to staining.

A regular professional cleaning maintains the shade for longer than any home product.

    Frequently asked questions

How long do whitening results last?
Usually from several months to around two years depending on your habits: smoking, coffee and tea shorten it, while good care and regular cleanings extend it.
    Does whitening cause sensitivity?
Temporary sensitivity is common and usually settles within days. It can be reduced with sensitive-teeth toothpaste before and after, and by adjusting concentration and duration to your case.
Does whitening lighten fillings and restorations?
No. Fillings, crowns and veneers do not change shade. This is why whitening is done first, and any new restoration is then matched to the resulting colour.
How many sessions will I need?
Many cases see a clear result in a single session; some need two, or take-home trays as follow-up, depending on the degree of staining.
    Are pharmacy whitening kits effective?
Results are limited because the concentration is low and the trays are not made for your mouth, which can cause gum irritation and uneven whitening. Dentist-made trays are safer and more effective.
    Can I whiten during pregnancy?
Cosmetic whitening is best postponed during pregnancy and breastfeeding, keeping to cleaning and preventive care. Always check with your doctor.
