What is a root canal?

Inside every tooth is living tissue called the pulp, containing the nerve and blood vessels. When decay or a fracture reaches it, it becomes inflamed and painful, and a root canal is what saves the tooth.

The dentist removes the inflamed tissue, cleans and disinfects the canals, then fills them with a special material that prevents the inflammation from returning.

When do you need a root canal?

Common signs: pain on chewing or lingering pain to hot and cold after the trigger is gone, gum swelling around the tooth, or the tooth darkening in colour.

The steps of a root canal

The visit starts with local anaesthetic and isolating the tooth, then cleaning the canals and measuring their length precisely.

After cleaning and disinfection the canals are filled, and the tooth is sealed temporarily or permanently depending on the case.

A crown is usually recommended after a root canal to protect the tooth from fracture and restore its strength.

How to tell nerve pain from sinus pain

Sinus pain usually affects several upper teeth at once, worsens when you bend forward, and comes with congestion or pressure around the face.

Nerve pain is normally focused on one specific tooth, worsens with hot or cold or when biting on that tooth, and may wake you at night.

Telling them apart definitively needs an examination and imaging, because the treatment for each is completely different — a check-up saves you from treating the wrong problem.
